Two variants:
– Shades Of Gray – maintains original aspect with more clarity, reduced vignette, more vibrant colors but not oversaturated
– HDR Director’s Cut – popping colors, thus more (over)saturated, creating a HDR effect, color corrected for natural skin representation
This is my personal take on enhancing RDR2 already beautiful scenery.
After trying more than 10 presets/mods that presented themselves as ultra-giga-mega-enhanced-photo-realistic, I didn’t find any to suit my taste, and they all had different flaws like being over sharpened, over saturated, tinted in different colors, or just plainly didn’t look for me like they were shown in pictures/videos. So, I’ve ended up editing Rokke’s Reshade and thus creating my own. I ended up with two variants, a more realistic one named ‘Shades Of Gray’ and a fake HDR one which should be used only on SDR displays as I don’t use a HDR monitor so I don’t know if it will work.
I want to mention that I calibrated my monitor using Lagom’s LCD Monitor Calibration which I recommend to anyone that wants to see the full potential of their displays, and am also using the sRGB_IEC61966-2-1_no_black_scaling.icc color profile.
Installation:
1. Download ReShade
2. Install for Vulkan/Dx12* and one my presets when prompted to automatically select the necessary packages OR manually choose these packages: SweetFX by CeeJay, qUINT by Marty McFly, Color effect by prod80, AstrayFX by BlueSkyDefender, Legacy Effects.
3. Start the game.
4. If the preset is not already on then follow the commands of the ReShade prompt that should appear on screen.
*Dx12 for me used to crash while loading the game but I’ve found a fix on some forum and made it work, so here’s what you need to do:
*1. Install ReShade for DX 10/11/12 (for RDR2 .exe)
*2. Find d3d12.dll inside game’s main folder, it should have the size of 3,712 KB, and save it in another place
*3. Install ReShade for Vulkan
*4. Go to C:\ProgramData\ReShade (this is where ReShade installs itself for Vulkan)
*5. Delete ReShade64.dll, copy the previously saved d3d12.dll and rename it ReShade64.dll
*6. Now you should be able to use ReShade with RDR2 running the Dx12 API. You should change the API to Dx12 before doing these to avoid crashing if Vulkan tries to load the dll meant for Dx12.
If this is your first time using ReShade, I recommend editing ReShade.ini in your main game’s folder and adding the following for ease of use:
[INPUT]
ForceShortcutModifiers=1
GamepadNavigation=1
InputProcessing=2
KeyEffects=107,0,0,0
KeyNextPreset=106,0,0,0
KeyOverlay=109,0,0,0
KeyPerformanceMode=0,0,0,0
KeyPreviousPreset=111,0,0,0
KeyReload=0,0,0,0
KeyScreenshot=44,0,0,0
To make this work open ReShade.ini with Notepad, search for the section where it says [INPUT] and copy-paste the above over. This will change some buttons and thus it won’t conflict with Rockstar’s Launcher trigger button which by default is the Home button. Instead ReShade will now be triggered by the – button on the numpad, also now you can toggle the effect with the + button, and change between multiple presets with / and * considering they’re all in the same folder. Personally, I alternate between my Shades of Gray and HDR presets quite often and this way I can do it while playing.
