Gunslinger Improvements – A CI Addon V1.0

Gunslinger Improvements - A CI Addon

A highly customizable addon to the “Catalogue Improvements” mod, which focuses on further improving the quality of Arthur Morgan’s assets, alongside applying some personal tweaks.

In my opinion, the quality of Arthur Morgan’s assets is superb for a 2018 videogame, especially his texture work. However, they are not perfect, so this mod attempts to fix and tweak many of the small issues I’ve had with them. From increasing the resolution and improving the materials of low quality body textures, to rearranging misplaced beard model hairs, to recreating the look certain clothing had in the official guidebook render or in the beta versions of the game, to fixing many minor inconsistencies between different face texture variations, I will attempt to detail all of my changes below.

Each feature of the mod is stored in its own folder, and can easily be removed at your desire. If you don’t like a certain change, just delete its folder!

Improved Body Textures

This is probably the biggest part of the mod, or at least, the one that took the most amount of time to create. Multiple tweaks were made to his textures, restoring beta details on his face like missing stubble strands and moles, adding ambient occlusion detail to his chin scar and overall increasing the AO strength, highly improving the quality of his PBR materials and the resolution of his eye textures, and many other small improvements.

Improved Length 1 Buzzed Hair

I felt like this hairstyle looked way too “stringy”, like it lacked density, even for a buzzcut. Now the sides and back of it are much fuller, and I believe it looks much better.

Improved Length 2 Mustache

Now, this model always made me hate the way Arthur looked with a length 2 beard. It looked like the hairs were all misplaced in comparison with his stubble. Now they align much better. I’ve also changed the decal texture it uses underneath, since I believe it was incorrectly using the pencil mustache texture.

Improved Length 3 Mustache

Fixes similar issues to the length 2 stache, but in a subtler way.

Beta Inspired French Dress Shirt

Retextures the white french dress shirt to be slightly darker, to try and match how it looked during beta. I also decided to have the bandage removed from the sleeve of the Guarma variation, as its inclusion was completely nonsensical.

Guidebook Render Inspired Neckerchief Fabric

In the game’s official guidebook render of Arthur, his neckerchief appears more “velvety”, and has a different microdetail fabric pattern. I’ve attempted to recreate this look, as I thought it looked nice.

Guidebook Render Inspired Shirt Fabric

Similar to the neckerchief, Arthur’s blue everyday shirt also featured a different microdetail pattern, and I’ve recreated it as well. However, this will only affect the blue shirt.

Improved Arthur’s Gambler Hat

This simply makes the PBR materials of Arthur’s hat consistent throughout all the crafted Trapper variations.

Improved Duster Coat

Restores a much more detailed, beta version of the subsurface scattering texture map for all duster coats.

Improved Gunslinger Jacket

Same as the duster coat, a more detailed version of the SSS map was restored for Arthur’s gunslinger jacket.

Improved Open Winter Shotgun Coat

Almost completely overhauls the PBR materials of the open winter shotgun coat, making them higher quality and more consistent with the closed variation of the coat.

No Shirt Collar Under Closed Winter Shotgun Coat

This is a very subjective change. It simply removes the everyday shirt collar added underneath the closed winter shotgun coat in Catalogue Improvements, as I did not like how it looked with the shirt collar completely buttoned up.

Prop Trunk Shirt Recolor

Now this is an incredibly meaningless, but cute change. It retextures the white-striped red shirt coming out of Arthur’s wardrobe trunk to a dark blue shirt, as a silly nod to his beta clothing.

Wardrobe Edits

Unfortunately, due to the nature of these file edits, I had to bundle multiple changes as a single feature, making this the second biggest part of the mod.

Although it isn’t really wardrobe related, the most prominent change is definitely Arthur’s hair and beard color, which have had their darker beta tints restored (specifically the ones seen in the game’s Official Trailer #2). I definitely didn’t like the idea of changing his vanilla tints at first, but they quickly grew on me, helped by the fact that they are much more consistent with the color of his eyebrows.

By far, my favorite change was completely redesigning “The Legend of the East” outfit, which I’ve always hated the look of. Now, in my opinion, the outfit looks much more aesthetically pleasing, and more rewarding to unlock.

Arthur’s main pants, boots, and spurs had their textures changed to slightly more desaturated beta inspired counterparts, and the brown beta boots were also added to the wardrobe.

Arthur’s union suit has also had its color changed from red to a very grimy white, to match the undershirt worn in CI’s The Autumn Gunslinger outfit, the union suit he wore in beta, and his overall canon color scheme. These changes apply both to “The Casual Gunslinger” outfit, and his scripted outfit during Blessed are the Peacemakers.

Speaking of “The Autumn Gunslinger”, its name was changed to “The Spring Gunslinger”, while “The Gunslinger” was altered to “The Autumn Gunslinger”. The outfits were also rearranged in the proper order of the seasons, and the same changes were applied to John’s “Cowboy” outfits, for proper consistency. And finally, “The Robbery Outfit” was renamed to “The Highwayman”, with its gloves now being removed. Sounds confusing? I have attached a GIF comparing the wardrobe menus below.

On the topic of wardrobe outfits, the “Owned Outfits” tab was separated into three different categories. Arthur’s Outfits, John’s Outfits, and Purchased Outfits. Much more organized!

Concerned about losing the clothing items that have been replaced? Worry not! They have all been either added to the clothing stores as new purchasable clothing, or are immediately added to the wardrobe upon loading your save.

Ammunition

My own personal edits to the bandolier and gun belt ammo textures.

Beta Inspired Satchel Strap

Restores the beta color, PBR materials, and microdetailing for Arthur’s satchel strap, which were embedded on the actual satchel texture maps.

Brass Buckles and Consistent Knife Sheath

Makes the brass buckles of Arthur’s weapon equipment warmer toned, which I think looks much more visually pleasing. On top of that, it also changes the iron buckles on his holster and bandolier to the same brass color, and makes the leather color of his knife sheath consistent with the rest of his equipment.

Worn Upgraded Equipment

It’s in the name. Makes the textures for the upgraded equipment you can buy at the gunsmiths much more worn and grimy, as I felt like they looked way too clean.

Player Images

Recreates a few of the player menu images where I thought Arthur looked too ridiculous.

This optional file adds extra dirt to the rest of Arthur’s hand textures, beyond just guarma.

Compatibility patch for TOR – The Outlaw’s Return mod.

Installation:

Make sure you have ScriptHookRDR2 and Lenny’s Mod Loader installed, then extract the contents of my .zip into your main RDR2 directory. The same applies to the optional files, although it will require you to overwrite some files from the main download.

After that, use Lenny’s Mod Manager to give Gunslinger Improvements priority over CI (and TOR, if you are using that), by placing it below those mods on your load list, and ticking the “overwrite” box.

Requirements:
Catalogue Improvements
ScriptHookRDR2 V2
Lenny’s Mod Loader
