ACT – Autonomic Challenge Training

“Let your actions define your skills.”

Are you tired of pausing the flow of adventure to choose skills that feel arbitrary? With ACT – Autonomic Challenge Training, your skills grow naturally as you face challenges, achieve milestones, and immerse yourself in Starfield’s universe. Forget about juggling Perk Points—just ACT.

What Does This Mod Do?

ACT completely redefines how skills are unlocked and progressed in Starfield:

Automatically Learn New Skills: ACT adds new skills automatically as you complete in-game challenges and achieve milestones. Progression requires that current skills have at least two completed challenges (3 ranks) before aquiring new skills.
Dynamic Skill Advancement: Using the companion mod PerkAutoLevel, skills you’ve already learned will automatically rank up as you meet specific challenges tied to those skills.
Immersive Progression: For ACT to grant new eligible skills, the player must sit down or sleep, representing a moment of contemplation and reflection before unlocking new possibilities.
Seamless Integration: Removes the need to allocate Skill/Perk Points manually. Instead, your gameplay behavior determines your progression.
Action Driven Experience: Disables Perk Points entirely via the popular PerkPointsPerLevel mod, making ACT the sole driver of aquiring new skills.

Why ACT?

The core idea behind ACT is simple: Stop worrying about skill trees and start playing. Whether you’re sprinting across alien landscapes, engaging in epic ship battles, or surviving hostile environments, your gameplay choices shape your character.

Take a moment to sit, reflect, and ACT—new skills are just a challenge away.

Important Notes:

Alpha Version: This is an evolving project. My preferences may not align perfectly with yours, but feedback is always welcome to refine the experience.

Requirements:
ACT requires PerkPointsPerLevel to disable manual Perk Points and PerkAutoLevel for automatic skill ranking, both available on Nexus.
ACT requires Cassiopeia Papyrus Extender to enable the extensibility functionality of adding additional FormLists outside the core mod to support additional perks or perk trees from other modes outside the base game
ACT requires Starfield Engine Fixes – SFSE for bPapyrusArrayNoLimit=1 in the ini if adding additional custom perks outside the base game
The included .ini file will disable Perk Points and is installed automatically.

Installation Instructions:

Install PerkPointsPerLevel, PerkAutoLevel, Cassiopeia Papyrus Extender, and Starfield Engine Fixes – SFSE from NexusMods. Follow their installation instructions if needed.
For Starfield Engine Fixes – SFSE you will want to enable bPapyrusArrayNoLimit aka – bPapyrusArrayNoLimit=1 in the ini
Download and install ACT using your preferred mod manager (e.g., MO2). The bsa, esm for ACT’s new skill progression, and the configuration .inifile for PerkPointsPerLevel to disable perk points altogether will be automatically placed in the correct location.
Launch the game, play, and when you’re ready for new skills, take a moment to sit or sleep and reflect on your journey.

Extending ACT: A Guide for Modders to Add Custom Perks and Progression Trees (check out the article for more details)

For modders interested in integrating their custom perks and progression trees into ACT, I’ve written an article detailing how to do so. The latest update to ACT introduces a streamlined system for automatically importing custom perks and their associated activation conditions, provided they meet the following requirement:

The perks and conditions are included in a FormList with the Name prefixed with ACT_FormList, example: ACT_FormList_StarbornPerks

The FormList should follow this sequence:
PerkA, ConditionForm for PerkA activation, PerkB, ConditionForm for PerkB activation, …

This structure ensures that each perk is paired with the appropriate condition for unlocking its first rank.

If you’re interested in making your mod compatible with ACT, feel free to share details about your mod and the progression tree you envision. There are a number of ACT compatibility plugins for popular mods in the optional downloads that can be used as reference.

Additionally, if you’d like compatibility for specific mods, letting me know will help prioritize and streamline the process. I’m happy to provide guidance or even work directly on the integration to support your project.
